As part of a Website marketing plan, an affiliate program is a way for sites to pay for incoming traffic. Let's call your site A and you refer to some other site B and there is some mechanism in place for B to pay A a small referral fee. Site A is called an affiliate of site B. It's a natural for the Web because affiliate links provide a way for value to flow forward along links rather than stop. PLUS even small sites can link to additional products and services they do not have the resources to provide themselves.

Also, you can provide added value (a key Web site marketing strategy) from your recommendations to your site visitors. Books are an example. There are books about all specialized areas. So business owners, or sites, will have some books to recommend within their area of expertise. And the added value? Since within your area of specialty you will know more about the books in your field than the more generic advice at a general site, you will have more worthwhile recommendations for your site visitors.

So if your site is about cooking with olive oil and the benefits of olive oil, you could have a short list of the best 3 or 4 cookbooks about olive oil for different kinds of cooks -- with your personal recommendation.

At a general bookstore site the visitor has more difficulty and must spend more time trying to find the best one. And too, they must rely on blurbs written by people employed by the publisher.

Since your personal recommendation builds trust and credibility during the visitor experience, only suggest the best. If it is less than best, visitors will stop coming back to your site. Displeased visitors can easily bad-mouth you, your products and services on blogs and social networking sites.

Another of the marketing strategies for web sites is not advertising but rather using website marketing strategies that work. Why? Because advertising doesn't work on the Web.
