From then until February 28, many carnival events take place. The carnival in Viareggio is famous for its masks, floats and parades. Mask courses take place on February 8, 15, 22 and 24, with the final event on March 1st at 5pm. Eight suburbs of Viareggio will host various events called “Rioni in festa” that will cover the entire month of February. DECEMBER Art in Ice December 2-6 (2009 and 2010), all day, free Livigno Resort, Sondrio, Lombardy, Italy Livigno Resort hosts the annual international Art in Ice competition. Ten teams of three sculptors compete to transform enormous blocks of pressed snow into works of art. The artists may use any manual tools and techniques in the execution of their projects and are free to interpret art and snow as they please. Weather permitting, the sculptures stay on display until March, when the spring sun slowly begins to melt them, remodeling their shapes into something totally unexpected.
