And here's how I learned this lesson from my friends in the hood...

We were crazy for baseball.

And we lived about forty minutes and five bus stops away from the most legendary field in the world of baseball. Once in awhile Frank Rooney's older brother, John, would pile us into his car and drop us at the field.

Approaching the stadium we could hear the flags snapping, "smell" the excitement hanging in the air, and hear the din of the gathering crowd. Other avid fans brushed by as we hung back. You see, we didn't always have the scratch it took to get into the ballpark. Without the price of admission, we shuffled around hoping to get past the guards.

No luck with that plan.

Night games, however, gave us cover. So being intrepid, risk-taking, stupid kids we used our wits, such as they were.

We sneaked in. We sneaked in by climbing up the masonry wall of Ebbets Field. Like a band of demented Brooklyn sherpas, we made our way to the open second tier and scattered like rats. We'd seen other kids get caught, smacked up the side of the head by a guard and unceremoniously ejected from the park to try another day.

After eluding the guards, we picked our seats and settled in. Could a summer night get any better?

It's not a specific baseball game or sensational play I remember as much as learning about life, business - and business marketing strategies - through baseball.
